The Dr D. “Martin” Hedstrom III Memorial Scholarship

for Awesome People Who Want to Make the World a Better Place

Introduction: Dr Martin Hedstrom was an ocean rescue lifeguard in Jacksonville Beach, Florida before completing medical school in the Dominican Republic. He was a charter member of Lifeguards Without Borders and was dedicated to community service and drowning prevention. More importantly, he was an adventurous, outgoing, all-around awesome guy that was a close friend and brother to us all. He was a best friend to everyone he met, and gave everyone of us stories upon stories to tell of our travels, rescues, and adventures. He was a family man and had 3 children with his wonderful wife. Unfortunately, while his wife was pregnant with their third child, Martin’s life was cut short when he died unexpectedly while undergoing cardiac surgery.

Purpose: To honor the legacy of Dr Martin Hedstrom by seeking out and supporting like-minded individuals who share the values and sense of adventure Martin lived by in their pursuit of higher education in the fields of emergency medicine and/or drowning prevention.

Description: Martin lived and worked in developing countries for most of his adult life. He knew firsthand the huge impact a small group of passionate people could have on their community.

We’re awarding prizes of material support worth up to $250 to applicants who have programs in developing countries that reduce drownings within the local community. This material support (uniforms, training texts, equipments, etc.) shall be used to enhance those programs and keep them going.
